The Beast roars into life

Bexley’s new deep cleaning machine is starting work, ready to play a vital role in keeping Bexley’s town centres clean and green.

For the first time ever in Bexley, our four main town centres will receive a thorough deep clean once a week or more, and our secondary town centres will see the machine giving them a deep clean once a fortnight.

This doubles the level of service we initially pledged when we published our draft Budget plans in January, plans which were approved in March by Conservative Councillors and opposed by Labour Councillors.

Speaking after members of the Cabinet launched the new vehicle in Bexleyheath town centre, Cllr Teresa O’Neill OBE, Leader of Bexley’s Conservative Council, said:

“Back in January we proposed a series of budget increases across Council services, from starting a new street tree planting programme, to increasing funding for community safety and more resources for keeping Bexley clean and green. Those have all been delivered in full.

We also announced we intended to buy this new deep cleaning machine so, for the first time ever in Bexley, we are able to really give our town centres a thorough clean on a regular basis.”

The Leader of Bexley’s Conservative Council, Cllr Teresa O’Neill, and Cllr Peter Craske launched the Borough’s new deep cleaning machine in Bexleyheath.

Cllr Peter Craske, Cabinet Member for Community Safety, Environment and Leisure, added:

“This new machine will transform our town centres and represents a giant step forward in keeping them clean and tidy.

So many people have come to say hello to “The Beast” this week as it has been out and about preparing for starting it’s full time job.

Our Budget has increased resources across a range of Council services and residents can see the results of this across our Borough.”

The budget increases for this year were only possible because Bexley’s Conservative Councillors worked hard and together to deliver the financial strategy set out in the 2014 Local election campaign.

A Bexley Conservatives spokesperson said: “We stated clearly that if we got on and made the savings necessary because of reductions in funding from Central Government then we would emerge in a strong position and be able to invest in key services. We have delivered exactly what we promised to do.

In the 2014 local elections Labour Councillors stated our financial plans would only lead to the Council being declared bankrupt!

No wonder they have refused to support our budget increases and indeed voted against every single one of them this year.”

The new deep cleaning machine will be working in our town centres on the following days:

Week One:

Monday:          Bexleyheath (am) / Northumberland Heath (pm)

Tuesday:          Sidcup (am) / Welling (pm)

Wednesday:    Erith (am) / Bexleyheath (pm)

Thursday:       Welling (am) / Sidcup station (pm)

Friday:             Bexleyheath (am) / Crayford (pm)

Week Two:

Monday:          Bexleyheath (am) / Bexley Village (pm)

Tuesday:         Sidcup (am) / Welling (pm)

Wednesday:   Erith (am) / Bexleyheath (pm)

Thursday:      Welling (am) / Blackfen (pm)

Friday:            Bexleyheath (am) / Belvedere Village (pm)

Cllr Philip Read is ready to welcome the new deep cleaning when it starts keeping Northumberland Heath clean and tidy, only made possible because of the efficient and effective way the Conservatives lead Bexley’s Council.
